A note from the Master

My brother's,

As you are all aware that attended our last stated meeting on Thursday, July 25th, a motion was approved by all in attendance to send a message to the Grand Lodge of South Dakota with a request to issue a statement on the events of discrimination that occurred in Georgia over a black man being accepted into masonry. Our Grand Master called me today to inform me he was contacted by the Grand Lodge of Georgia with a request to allow them to handle this delicate situation appropriately. As you can well imagine this is both a travesty and embarrassment to all Mason's especially to our brother's in Georgia. While I am proud that situation does not exist here at our lodge I can also understand the Grand Master of Georgia wanting to handle this without outside interference. We all need to keep in mind discrimination occurs in all facets of life not just in relation to a person's color.

Fraternally,

Ray D. Harmon, WM
Mt. Rushmore Lodge 220

  1. It seems a shame to not keep your progressive position on the issue.

Your right, racism does happen in all facets of life, but in the fraternity that proclaims to be above the dross, that we instead back peddle to shelter our own failings.

  2. Is all discrimination ok, because we discriminate against cheese we don't like or people we don't get along with?

Lets not forget this is one discrimination comes with a "special history" for the United States. Even beyond what other prior colonies experienced. And a special history withn the fraternity.

How many great schisms are there in Freemason history? One of them was in the United States over race.

I'm all for them handling it without interference, but they started out poorly in handling it and it seems to be moving more towards any solution will do - or anything will do.

Wasn't the statement by your lodge generally against racism without mentioning Georgia? It seems a standing statement from grand lodges in general would go a long way to setting the tone of the fraternity for the future. And it's just words..

I keep thinking of Bro. Hodapp's point that there have been recent lapses in recognition for much less - or maybe our priorities on beureacracy are higher than I think in the scale of things.
